Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)

The Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) course is an intensive, performance-based training program designed for professionals who provide immediate care in emergency medical situations. Covering detailed assessments, advanced interventions, and patient transport, this course follows the National Occupational Competency Profiles (NOCP) as outlined by the Paramedic Association of Canada.

Through realistic scenario-based learning, participants gain the confidence and capabilities to manage emergencies in a variety of high-pressure environments.

  • Emergency medical professionals

  • Firefighters and rescue teams

  • Industrial or remote site responders

  • Individuals responsible for patient care and transport prior to hospital arrival

Course Duration

  • 80–120 hours, based on jurisdictional requirements

  • Recertification: 40 hours

Delivered through hands-on skill development, simulations, and guided instruction, this course provides comprehensive training in:

  • Roles and responsibilities of a professional responder

  • Scene management and safe patient care

  • Anatomy, physiology, and injury/illness assessment

  • Airway management and respiratory emergencies

  • Circulatory emergencies, CPR, AED, and shock management

  • Trauma care: bleeding, fractures, head, spinal, and internal injuries

  • Acute and chronic illness response

  • Poisoning and environmental emergencies

  • Pregnancy, labour, and newborn care

  • Crisis intervention and care for special populations

  • Patient lifting, moving, extrication, and transportation

  • Pharmacology awareness

  • Marine and workplace-specific response

  • Multiple casualty incident management

  • Jurisdiction-specific legal and procedural requirements

Certification Details

  • Certification: 3-year Emergency Medical Responder certification (digital certificate)

  • Prerequisite: Current Standard First Aid with CPR Level C certification

  • Completion Requirements:

    • 100% attendance and participation

    • Minimum 75% on written, closed-book exam

    • Successful demonstration of required skills

    • Two evaluated scenarios (one trauma, one medical)
