Marine Advanced First Aid

The Marine Advanced First Aid course is an in-depth, 31-hour program designed to prepare designated responders on board vessels to manage medical emergencies in marine environments. This course focuses on immediate first aid, the use of marine medical equipment, and safe patient transport—both within a vessel and during transfers to shore-based facilities.

Meeting the standards of Transport Canada Transport Publication (TP) 13008E, this course is essential for those operating under a near coastal voyage, class 1 or unlimited voyage

Who Should Take This Course?

This course is ideal for:

  • Individuals designated to provide first aid on board vessels

  • Mariners pursuing Master or Officer Certificates or endorsements

  • Crew members on commercial ships, ferries, or offshore vessels

Course Duration

  • 31 hours in-class

  • Recertification: Not permitted under Transport Canada TP 13008E regulations

​What You’ll Learn

Participants will engage in marine-specific first aid scenarios and gain practical knowledge in:

  • Roles and responsibilities of the professional marine responder

  • Scene management and emergency response aboard vessels

  • Infection prevention and control in marine environments

  • Anatomy, physiology, and detailed patient assessments

  • Airway and respiratory emergency management

  • Circulatory emergencies, shock, and bleeding control

  • Trauma care: musculoskeletal, spinal, chest, abdominal, and pelvic injuries

  • Medical emergencies: poisoning, environmental illnesses, pregnancy, and chronic conditions

  • Care for special populations and crisis intervention

  • Patient lifting, extrication, and transferring patients from ship to shore

  • Multiple casualty incident management

  • Marine-specific pharmacology and safety protocols

  • Legal and workplace-specific responsibilities aboard vessels

Certification Details

  • Certification:

  • 3-year Marine Advanced First Aid (Red Cross certificate)

  • Transport Canada Certificate, issued upon successful completion

  • Prerequisites: None

  • Completion Requirements:

    • 100% attendance and participation

    • Minimum 75% on closed-book written exam

    • Successful demonstration of all competencies

    • Completion of two evaluated scenarios (1 medical, 1 trauma)
