S-100 Wildfire Suppression & Fireline Safety

The S-100 Wildfire Suppression course is a two-day certification program designed to equip new and prospective wildfire personnel with the essential skills and knowledge required to safely and effectively respond to wildland fires. This course is a prerequisite for those seeking seasonal wildfire employment in British Columbia and is certified by the BC Ministry of Forests.

Course Overview

This course blends classroom instruction with hands-on field training, giving participants a solid understanding of wildfire behavior, suppression techniques, safety protocols, and the use of firefighting equipment in real-world scenarios.

  • 16 hours in-class

  • Recertification: 8 hours

What You’ll Learn

Participants will gain a practical foundation in:

Wildfire Behavior
Understand how wind, terrain, and fuel types impact fire movement and intensity.

Suppression Techniques
Learn basic fire control strategies including fireline construction, direct and indirect attacks, and containment methods.

Fireline Safety
Identify hazards and follow essential safety procedures to protect yourself and your crew.

Team Structure & Communication
Get familiar with fireline roles and develop communication skills to operate effectively within a wildfire response team.

Equipment Operation
Hands-on training with hoses, portable pumps, and Class A foam—ensuring participants can safely and effectively deploy firefighting tools in the field

Certification Details

  • Certification: BC Ministry of Forests S-100

  • Validity: 1 year (must be renewed annually with an S-100A refresher)

  • Prerequisites: None

  • Delivery: 2-day format (1 day classroom + 1 day field practice)

  • Instructor: Delivered by experienced wildfire professionals
