S-185 Fire Entrapment Avoidance & Safety

The S-185 Fire Entrapment Avoidance & Safety course is an important add-on to the S-100 Wildfire Suppression program. It provides wildfire personnel with the knowledge to recognize potential fire entrapment situations and the strategies needed to avoid them safely. This course is a requirement for individuals working under BC Government wildfire contracts and is highly recommended for all wildfire firefighters operating in British Columbia.

Course Overview

Delivered as a 2–3 hour classroom session, the S-185 is held on the afternoon of Day 1 of the S-100 course. Instruction focuses on recognizing dangerous fire behavior, improving situational awareness, and executing safe, efficient escape strategies if an entrapment risk arises.​

Participants will develop a strong understanding of:

  • How to assess wildfire conditions that could lead to entrapment

  • The importance of escape routes, safety zones, and crew communication

  • How to respond quickly and appropriately to changing fire behavior

  • Fireline safety protocols and emergency decision-making

  • Strategies to avoid loss of life in extreme fire scenarios

Admission Requirements

Participants will develop a strong understanding of:

  • Prerequisite: Completion or current enrollment in the S-100 Wildfire Suppression course

  • Participants under 16 must provide a parent or guardian signature

  • Full payment or written approval for invoicing is required prior to course start

​Certification Requirements

  • Attend and participate in the full course session

  • Demonstrate an understanding of course objectives through engagement and evaluation
